Marrying Economics and Environmental Science: Investigating climate-change disasters and what drives them

Abstract

The effects of climate change span all facets of our environment, our economy and our society. To be effective, science needs to bridge and integrate these facets, and engage in interdisciplinary research. In this talk, I will present two examples for such research, undertaken at the University of Sydney. The first case study deals with estimating the spill-overs of damages from Queensland’s Cyclone Debbie into regions that were not directly affected by the storm. The second case study takes a global perspective and examines what role tourism plays in driving climate change.
