The Impact of Liquidity Loans on Mobile Money Volumes

Presenter: Russell Toth | University of Sydney
Co-author: Siobhan Herbert | University of Sydney

Abstract

We evaluate the impacts of an automatic and instant digital liquidity loan on the mobile money volumes of agents of the largest mobile money provider in Myanmar. Loan use is unrestricted, and most agents have additional economic activities. We leverage two quasi-experiments exploiting variation from loan policies on both the extensive and intensive margins to estimate the causal effects of the loans. Extra credit has significant, positive impacts on mobile money volumes, which taper over time.
